Why My Home Electric Heaters Are Not Working (And What To Do About It)

If you have an electric heating system that stops working and it’s cold outside, that cold can quickly creep into your home and make for an uncomfortable – if not dangerous – night.
Why My Home Electric Heaters Are Not Working And What To Do About It

If you’re wondering why my home electric heaters are not working, here are a few reasons why, and what to do about it:

  1. Check the breaker. Sometimes an electric heater system can simply overload the breaker panel. After all, breakers are meant to “break”, which protects the circuitry inside your home by temporarily cutting it off from the main electrical current coming from the power lines. The first and easiest solution to why your home electric heaters are not working is to open up the panel and ensure that all of the breakers are turned “on”. This could mean they are all pointing one way or another, so compare the electric heating breaker to the other breakers that are functioning properly in order to see that they are all facing the same way. If you find that the breaker has flipped to off, then you can turn off the electric heaters, turn on the breaker, and then turn the electric heaters back on. However, even if this works, you still may not know the underlying reason why the breaker tripped off in the first place, so we highly recommend you call us or an electrician of your choice to investigate the problem.

  2. Change the filter. Modern heating systems have automatic shut-off capability if they detect an unsafe operating condition. It could be that your home electric heaters are not working because the filter has clogged. In that case, simply follow the manufacturer’s instructions to replace the filter, or give us a call if you require assistance.

  3. Call for emergency service. When your home heats up or cools down rapidly due to your home electric heaters not working, it can put you and your family in danger. If you check the breaker and the filter, and you’re still not sure why your heat isn’t working properly in your home, give us a call as soon as possible so we can provide you with emergency service to get your heating turned back on.

Unfortunately, heating systems can be complex to understand, with electrical components, gasses, fluids, piping, exchangers, and other pieces that all need to function properly in order to heat your home. If your home electric heaters are not working, don’t hesitate to give us a call so we can send a technician out to properly diagnose and fix the issue. 815.477.2600
